* 68030/16 MHz processor or higher, or Power Macintosh in native mode
* System 7 or later
* 8 MB RAM
* 6 MB available hard disk space
* 13-inch or larger monitor, 256 colors
* Double speed CD-ROM drive
A.D.A.M. The Inside Story is both a native PowerPC application, and a standard 68000 application (a so-called Fat Binary). It will automatically run in the appropriate mode for your system.
A.D.A.M. The Inside Story requires about 6 MB of free memory for best performance. It will work with as little as 3 MB (3000K) of free memory, but certain parts of the product such as Anatomy and Family Scrapbook will not be able to run at the same time, so moving between them will become more difficult. This situation has become more important with the release of System 7.5, because that version of the operating system uses much more memory than previous versions, when installed using the normal Easy installation.
You may check your system's free memory by selecting "About This Macintosh" from the Apple menu when the Finder is active. If your system's Largest Unused Block is less than 5,000K you should make more memory available. This can be done in several ways: You can purchase and install more memory; set the Cache size to 32K in the Memory control panel; quit all other running applications and remove non-essential INIT's and other extensions from your System Folder; use the new RAMDoubler software product by Connectix; or use Macintosh Virtual Memory. Unfortunately, using Virtual Memory is not always a good solution for multimedia products like The Inside Story because animations and audio sounds sometimes don't work properly when using Virtual Memory. This is particularly true for 68000 based systems. Using a small amount of Virtual Memory (1 or 2 MB) can often fix memory limitation problems in The Inside Story itself, and usually results in faster performance. However, using Virtual Memory can cause problems on some systems in the Self-Running Demos.
The best solution is to install more memory; 12 MB or more is optimal.
See Troubleshooting below for more information on memory optimization.
If you are getting no sound in A.D.A.M. The Inside Story, or it sometimes locks up or the screen turns completely black, it may be caused by interference with a Control Panel or Extension (INIT). In particular, some problems have been noted on some model PowerMacs that have Speech Recognition, Telephone, or Fax support turned on. If you are experiencing problems, use the Extensions Manager Control Panel to turn off all unnecessary Control Panels and Extensions. Then restart your computer and try it again.
Problems with Virtual Memory?
If you are experiencing popping, static, or choppy sound while playing animations, you are probably running A.D.A.M. The Inside Story using Virtual Memory. While this addition to your available system memory is the least expensive way to increase memory, it can produce problems. Turn off the Virtual Memory option in the Memory control panel and set the available built-in memory for your system to a minimum of 8 MB Available. Built-in memory (also called real memory, physical memory, or RAM) is always better than Virtual Memory or third-party RAM expansion programs.
Problems with Not Enough Memory?
The message "Not Enough Memory" might appear when you try to run the Family Scrapbook and Anatomy portions of the program simultaneously. (You can switch between the portions and bypass running portions simultaneously.) To run them simultaneously, your computer system must have 6 MB of available RAM. To check available RAM: from the Finder, choose About This Macintosh from the Apple menu. In the window, verify that the Largest Unused Block is 6,000K or greater. If you need to free up memory, quit all other running applications. If you still need more memory, verify that the Cache Size is 32K in the Memory control panel. Finally, you may need to disable nonessential extensions. Refer to the Macintosh User's Guide for more information on system extensions and the Memory control panel.
FWB 1.0 CD-ROM Toolkit incompatibility
The CD-ROM driver included in the FWB 1.0 CD-ROM Toolkit does not work with A.D.A.M. The Inside Story videos. Viewing QuickTime videos with this driver will cause pops, click, stuttering video, and unsynchronized sound tracks. This driver has also been shown to degrade program performance in general. FWB reports that these problems have been fixed in version 1.5 and later.
System 7.0 PowerMac video color problem
When viewing videos in A.D.A.M. The Inside Story on a PowerPC Macintosh using System 7.0, you may notice a pink hue around some video clips. This is known to happen with some QuickTime videos when viewed on a PowerMac under System 7.0. It was fixed in System 7.5 from Apple.
